How much paper do you use every year? Probably you can't answer that question quickly. In 1900 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram(公斤)for each person in a year. Now some countries use more than 200 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. The amount(总数)of paper a country uses shows how far advanced(先进的)the country is, some people say. It is difficult to say whether this is true; different people mean different things by the word "advanced". But countries like the United States, England and Sweden certainly use more paper than other countries. Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly(一般的)used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on papyrus(纸草制的纸); the Europeans used parchment(羊皮纸) for many hundreds of years Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin(皮) of certain young animals. We've learnt some of the most important facts of European history from records that kept on parchment.

The wheel
Man's first invention was the wheel (轮子). Although no wheel forms are found in nature, it is believed the earliest "wheel" were logs which were used for moving weights over the earth's surface. No one recorded who he was or when it happened, but when the "first inventor" placed a wheel on an axle(轴),man began to roll(move along by turning over and over) from one place to another. Records of this sort of wheel have been found in Egypt dating back to 2000 B.C. and earlier Chinese history has records of the invention of the same parts of machines. The wheel was so interesting in the mind of man that he has spent centuries building machines around it;yet in over 4000 years he has not changes its basic design. All about us we see many kinds of wheels which come and are developed from the first wheel. The rapidly turning propeller(螺旋桨) of an aeroplane engine, the hairspring(游丝) of a tiny watch and so on are examples of the turning motion (运动) which are showing the character of our world of machine. It is hard to think of the xontinbuous motion without the wheel.
