In the United States the most popular
form of folk dancing since the earliest days has been
squaredancing. In those days, men and women worked in
groups to build a house or harvest crops. When the work
was done, they usually danced merrily and happily in a
store or in a farm kitchen.
A square is formed by four couples
who stand facing the centre of the square. Each couple
stands on one side of the square with the boy on the left
and the girl on the right.
Large or small numbers of people
can dance at one time. Sometimes 800 or 1000 people may
be dancing at the same time. Or there may be only one
square of eight people.
Costumes are worn by those who dance
the squaredance. This makes the dancing more colorful
to watch. Women often wear full skirts of various colors
with a pretty blouse(短上衣). Men may have colored shirts
and western trousers which they wear only when they are
squaredancing. In some country areas, everyone wears
his best clothes.
Today in all parts of the United
States you will find some schools, clubs, or other groups
that are squaredancing for fun.

Before 1883, most cities in the
United States had their own time. They set their time
by the sun. This made many problems for the railroad companies.
Their trains went to more than 300 different cities. Every
city had a different time. In 1883, Willia Allan made
a plan to divide the United States into four different
parts called time zones. This made things easier for the
railroad comparies. Now every city in the same time zone
has the same time. The map shows the time zones. They
are Pacific Standard Time (PST), Mountains Standard Time
(MST), Central Standard Time (CST) and Eastern Standard
Time (EST). The clocks below the map tell the time in
each zone.

When my first wartime Christmas
came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure
if I could make it home for the holidays. Only on the
afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would
have threeday passes posted. I was one of the lucky soldiers.
It was Christmas Eve when I arrived,
and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door.
I could see beyond
her, into the corner of the living room where the
tree had always stood. There were lights, all colors,
shining against the green of a pine.
“Where did it come from?”I asked.
“I asked the gate boy to cut it,”my
mother said. “I wouldn't have had one just for myself,
but when called—oh, such a rush! He just brought it in
this afternoon...”
The pine reached to the proper height,
almost to the ceiling, and the Tree
Top Krystal Star
was in its place. A few green branches reached about a
little disorderly at the side, I thought, and there was
a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But the tree
filled the room with warm light and the whole house with
the pleasant smell of Christmas.
“It's not like the one you used
to find,”my mother went on. “Yours were always in good
shape. I suppose the gate boy didn't know where to look
for it. But I couldn't be critical.”
“Don't worry, ”I told her. “It's
perfect.”
It wasn't, of course, but at the
moment I realized something for the first time: all Christmas
trees are perfect.
86 From the passage,
we can infer that .
A. the writer spent his first Christmas
during the war
B. all soldiers did not go home
for Christmas during the war
C. all the soldiers had threeday
passes
D. the writer did not want to go
home for Christmas at first
87 When the writer
got home, .
A. it was December 23
B. it was snowing heavily
C. he found a Christmas tree in
the living room
D. the gate boy was cutting a Christmas
tree for his mother
88 From the passage,
we can conclude that .
A. the writer used to cut very beautiful
Christmas trees
B. his mother didn't like perfect
trees
C. his mother didn't want to have
a pine tree
D. the writer wouldn't have a tree
cut by someone else
89 “All Christmas trees are
perfect”, because they can remind you of ____.A. the wartime
B. the green of a pine
C. the pleasant smell
D. the sweet home
90 The best title
for this passage would be “_______”.
A. How to Choose a Christmas Tree
B. How Soldiers Spent Christmas
C. Perfect Christmas Tree
D. Christmas with a Tree
