In 776 B.C the first Olympic Games
were held at the foot of Mount Olympus to honour the Greeks'chief
god, Zeus. The Greeks emphasized physical fitness
and strength in their education of youth.
Therefore,
contests in running,
jumping, discuss and javelin throwing, boxing, and chariot racing were held in individual cities, and the winners competed every four years
at Mount Olympus. Winners were greatly honoured by having
olive wealth placed on their heads and having poems sung
about their deeds. Originally these were held as games to
take place.
The Greeks attached so much importance
to those games that they calculated time in four year
cycles called “Olympiads” dating from 776 B.C.
What conclusion can we draw about
the ancient Greeks?
A. They like to fight.
B. They were very athletic.
C. They liked a lot of ceremony.

These days, people who do manual work often receive
far more money than clerks who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently refered to as “white
collar workers” for the simple reason that they usually
wear a collar and tie to go to work.
Such is human nature,
that a great many people are willing to sacrifice
higher pay for becoming white collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations,
as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked
as a dustman f
or the Ellesmere
Corporation.
When he got married, Alfred was too embarrassed to say anything
to his wife about his job.
He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he left home dressed in a fine black suit.
He then changed into overalls and
spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this
for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf's wife has never discovered that she
married a dustman and she never will, for Alf has just
found another job.
He will soon be working in an office as a junior
clerk.
He will be earning only half as
much as he used to,
but he feels that his rise in status is well worth
the loss in money. From now on, he will wear a suit all day and others will call him“Mr. Bloggs”, not “Alf”.
1 By comparison with people who worked in office, those people who do manual work often
receive more money. “manual”can be replaced by________.
A. physical work B. work done by hand
C. mental labour D.
blue collar class
2 When Alfred got married, he didn't say anything to his wife about his job, because________.
A. he distrusted his wife

his wife

D. he is just not willing to talk about it with his wife
3 In order to get his rise in
status, Alfred
lost________.
A. his original job B.
his former good friends
C. half of the salary which he
used to get
D. his family
4 By being calling as “Mr. Bloggs”
instead of “Alf”,
Alfred felt________.
A. he had regained his social status
B. very comfortable
C. he could raise his head before
his wife
D. he became more decent than before.
5 Alfred Bloggs took a shower
and changed back into his suit,
and his fellow dustman's reaction was________.

his wife
