An average honeybee colony has
about 30000 bees,
but there are maybe up to 80000 in one hive.
There are three different kinds of bees in the
hive: a queen, several hundred drones, and thousands of worker bees.
The colony is headed by the queen
bee. She
is a big female who lays all the eggs in the colony.
She starts
to lay them during the first warm days of spring
and continues to lay them every day till the end of the
summer. At
first, the
number of eggs runs into dozens a day: then it becomes
hundreds and keeps increasing as the season goes on.
At the height of the season,
the queen may lay as many as 1000000 eggs in her
lifetime. The
queen is the mother of the entire colony, and the whole hive is one big family of bees.
The drones are the males of the
colony. They
take no part in the work of the hive.
They have only on a function to fertilize the eggs
of the queen. The worker bees are the females smaller
in size than the queen.
They cannot lay eggs,
but they do all the labor in the hive necessary
for the maintenance and growth of the colony.
The beehive is a smoothly runned,
organized society with an efficient division of
labor.
